The History of ACRE
Shortly after relocating to Sacramento from Silicon Valley in 1981, Bob Berg (Bishop Hawk) recognized the need for a professional organization dedicated to Sacramento’s commercial real estate community. With the support of respected industry leaders, ACRE—the Association of Commercial Real Estate—was established to bring professionals together and promote relationships within the industry. Among those who helped build the organization’s foundation and served on its first Board of Directors were Irv Rios of Cahill Brokerage, Mike Kirk of Sylva-Kirk, Dick Vieille, an independent broker, Jim Stanley of CB Commercial, and Dennis McGillivrey of Grubb & Ellis.
In 1983, with the help of Irv Rios, Dick Vieille, and Gen Johnson, ACRE formalized its mission: “The Association of Commercial Real Estate, ACRE, is a non-profit, professional association formed to promote relationships and professionalism within the Sacramento commercial real estate community.” To introduce the organization to the industry, informational materials, membership applications, and invitations were mailed to commercial real estate brokers and agents throughout the region, inviting them to join ACRE and attend its first meeting at the Beverly Garland Hotel.
As ACRE’s Founding President in 1983 and President again in 1984, Bob Berg worked alongside the Board of Directors and Gen Johnson to recruit members, secure quality speakers, and establish ACRE as a lasting presence in Sacramento’s commercial real estate industry. Built on a foundation of professional relationships, education, and collaboration, ACRE continues to bring together commercial real estate professionals to strengthen connections and support the growth of the Sacramento region.
